about

On Saturday 21st October I performed at the prestigious Ealing Extranormal experimental electronic music night. I chose to write a set using my Meng Wingie II as the sound source for the first time. I gradually pieced together some melodic ideas and a loose structure for the set.

Unfortunately on the night the Wingie had a serious reaction with the PA I was playing through - nothing but squealing harsh high pitched feedback. I had no time to figure a way round the problem, but there was no way I could use this as my sound source. I was on stage in 15 minutes, and I had no idea what I was going to do. Panic stations.

Thankfully I had my Korg Kaoscillator as part of my live rig. I was using it on occasion for some extra ambient tones, but it was now going to have to be my main sound source. I still had no idea what I was going to do, but I figured as long as I was patient and took my time, I could build up something ambient, something droney.

Track 1, The Hands of Moirai, is the result. A 20+ minute live improvisation. There is some room noise on the recording - coughing, chairs scrapes, the odd bang etc, but I was so happy with the result I wanted to release it and tell the story behind it.

Track 2, Parcae, is one of the final practice runs I recorded before the gig. It's pretty much what I was intending to perform on the night, so I thought it would be interesting to include this to show what the set was going to sound like.

Track 3, Origins, is one of the first practice runs I recorded in preparation for the gig. Listening back to it I thought it would be interesting to include this to show the evolution in the writing process. This is a lot more ambient, gentle and drifting compared to Parcae.
